Only a handful of players will do that. Get 5 hits in a game and you get your moment of glory...your 5 minutes of fame...you get your name in the record book.
In the Angels 17-0 win over Milwaukee, Ellis Valentine was red-hot today, scorching them for hit after hit at Anaheim Stadium.
"To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax. I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I must admit, I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this was a special once-in-a-lifetime chance for the record book. On the last hit, I was ready to swing at anything close, I was that excited. That's why my third base coach called time and told me, 'Calm down and wait for a good pitch.' That got me back on track and I nailed the first one in the strike zone."
On his record-setting day Valentine delivered 5 hits in 6 at-bats, a day he will not soon forget.
E. Valentine singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, flied out in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.
This season Valentine has hit at a .274 clip and produced 60 RBIs, 11 home runs and 75 runs scored. | | Monday, August 18th, 1986: Andrew Tags Twins 5 Hits It was a good day for the Angels at Anaheim Stadium as they clipped the Minnesota Twins 8-5. It was tremendous day for Kim Andrew, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 5 for 6 barrage.
The California second baseman told reporters after his big 5-hit performance, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm 'not dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then in a split-second decide to try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well."
K. Andrew singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, flied out in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit a two-run home run off W. Ritchie in the 8th and singled in the 9th.
So far this season Andrew is batting .335 with 9 home runs, 48 RBIs and 70 runs scored. He has 161 hits in 481 at-bats, 53 walks and a .401 OBP. Andrew has played in 117 games. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 78-57, .578 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 37-28, .569 PCT | | Record on the road | 41-29, .586 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 9-4, .692 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 19-18, .514 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 28-20, .583 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 50-37, .575 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 8-2, .800 PCT | | Record in April | 17-10, .630 PCT | | Record in May | 15-14, .517 PCT | | Record in June | 16-9, .640 PCT | | Record in July | 15-13, .536 PCT | | Record in August | 15-11, .577 PCT |
