Wednesday, August 16th, 1995: Number 2000 for Sax
Steve Sax was bubbling over with joy, celebrating his 2000th hit in the Montreal 6-0 victory over the Astros at Stade Olymipque.

"I learned what hard work, focus, dedication and opportunity can do. This is how it pays off."

The 35-year-old second baseman achieved that milestone with 3 hits in 5 at-bats to join the exclusive 2000-hit club.

His manager said, "Steve plays the same every day and every inning - with all his heart - that's why he's such a special player."

Lifetime Sax is batting .296 with 2002 hits, 60 home runs, 1024 runs scored and 861 RBIs.
Thursday, August 3rd, 1995: Velarde Sensational, 5-5
The Astros whipped the Cardinals 6-5 at Astrodome and Randy Velarde had a big hand in the win. The Astros second baseman came to the plate 5 times and collected 5 hits. It was a good day for Velarde and a tough day for St. Louis.

"I just go up there and whale away and hope it hits the barrel of the bat," he said. "There really isn't any plan."

Plan or not, Velarde delivered today -- 5-5 is outstanding in any league.

R. Velarde singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

Velarde on the season is batting .274 with 8 home runs. His totals include 40 RBIs and 40 runs scored. He has played in 101 games.
Monday, July 31st, 1995: Cormier, Suppan Swap Clubs
It has been in the rumor mill for several weeks, but today team officials for Houston and Milwaukee confirmed an agreement. The Astros dealt 28-year old starting pitcher Rheal Cormier to the Brewers for 20-year old minor league reliever Jeff Suppan.

To date Cormier is 7-8 in 22 starts with a 4.50 ERA and has 58 strikeouts in 132 innings.
