| Breaking News | | Friday, August 22nd, 1986: Senators Triumph, Whitewash New York Bruce Kison was downright nasty in pitching a 7-0 shutout against New York. His splitter was diving, his slider was breaking and the Yankees were swinging and looking bad. In the solid 5-hit shutout the Senators hurler chalked up 6 strikeouts and no walks in a strong outing.
"As the game went on, he got stronger," his manager said. "I thought he really turned it up a notch in the eighth and ninth and probably threw his best breaking balls in those two innings. They put a lot of balls in play early in the count because he was throwing strikes."
In season stats Kison shows a 16-6 record in 30 games, 217.1 innings, 162 strikeouts and a 3.02 ERA. | | Wednesday, August 20th, 1986: Carew On Fire! 5-5 for Washington! If just anyone could go out and hit a baseball, big dollar contracts wouldn't exist. But they can't, so the good hitters get the big bucks. Rod Carew showed how it's done as he went 5 for 5 against the Oakland Athletics and helped the Washington Senators beat them 12-0.
The manager for the Athletics told the SION sportswriters, "We made some bad pitches and he took advantage of it. That's the game of baseball. Don't make mistakes and you win a lot more ballgames."
If Carew keeps hitting like this, he could be headed for a big pay raise.
R. Carew walked in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run single in the 4th, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off P. Nastu in the 9th.
This year Carew is hitting .306 with 8 home runs. | | Thursday, August 14th, 1986: Ruffin Holds California Scoreless Washington's Bruce Ruffin breezed through the Angels lineup today, collecting a 5-hit shutout and a 6-0 victory along the way. Ruffin fanned 3 as well.
"I didn't really feel like I had my game today," Ruffin confessed, "but some days are like that -- you just gotta go with what you have."
This year Ruffin has compiled a 10-8 record with a 3.95 ERA. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 78-57, .578 PCT | | Position in Division | 3rd, 3.0 GB | | Record at home | 35-34, .507 PCT | | Record on the road | 43-23, .652 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 8-6, .571 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 18-10, .643 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 25-16, .610 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 53-41, .564 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 8-2, .800 PCT | | Record in April | 12-15, .444 PCT | | Record in May | 19-10, .655 PCT | | Record in June | 10-15, .400 PCT | | Record in July | 21-7, .750 PCT | | Record in August | 16-10, .615 PCT |
