Friday, July 1st, 1988: Best Starter Chosen by Sub League 2
When the Steelheads skipper wrote Jones on the lineup card, it was a bad omen for the opposition. Outing after outing in June he took command and usually got the win.

He dominated with a 4-0 mark and 2.90 ERA in 5 starts. The gifted Steelheads star pitched 40.1 innings, fanned 22 and held opposing teams to a .222 average.

For his excellent mound work Jones was named the SL2 Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

Jones has gone 4-2 this season with an ERA of 3.36 and 30 strikeouts in 64.1 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .208 against him.
Friday, July 1st, 1988: Chesapeake's Meier SL2 #1 Batter in June
Even though he is a newcomer to MLB Double A, Dave Meier put up some good numbers in June and brought home the SL2 Batter of the Month trophy.

He was one of Chesapeake's offensive leaders with a .431 average in 25 games. He also racked up 4 home runs, 23 RBIs and 30 runs scored.

This season Meier has 6 home runs and a .360 batting average.
Tuesday, June 28th, 1988: Grenadiers Shut out by Norris
"That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," the Steelheads manager told reporters after today's game.

The Grenadiers ran into a buzzsaw as Mike Norris cut them down to size 10-0 with a 4-hit shutout.

His skipper added, "He knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."

In the complete game whitewash the Chesapeake hurler doled out 3 walks and registered 5 strikeouts.

In the postgame press conference his catcher said, "Mike goes out there and just goes about his business. I don't think he gets too concerned about what's going on. You can call any pitch and you know where he's going to be."

Norris also got some praise from the Durham manager.

"He really kept us in check today. Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away... we took some pathetic swings."

This year Norris has compiled a 7-4 record with a 3.72 ERA.
