The American League named the winner of the Pitcher of the Month Award.
It went to Mark Fidrych of Detroit Tigers, who impressed the voters with a glittering 4-0 record in August.

The Detroit star hurler made 5 starts, allowed 30 hits in 39.2 innings, struck out 24 and had a 1.59 ERA.

Saturday, August 16th, 1986: McDowell Rips Oakland for 5 Hits
Oddibe McDowell really sizzled at the plate in today's 12-1 win over Athletics. The Detroit center fielder blistered Oakland for 5 hits in 5 at-bats.

"McDowell was too tough to get out today," the Athletics skipper said in the postgame interview. "No matter what we threw him, he hit it. And he hit some good pitches, too."

O. McDowell hit an RBI single in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

Currently McDowell has 10 home runs and a .272 batting average.
Wednesday, August 6th, 1986: Engle Sidelined for 3-4 Weeks
"It was kinda freaky. Hopefully, I'll be back in the lineup soon," said a dejected Dave Engle after injuring himself in a game against Seattle. The Detroit manager told SION reporters, "He will miss up to 3-4 weeks with a scratched cornea." The Tigers will have to decide over the next day or two whether the catcher will go on the disabled list.

This season Engle has hit 2 home runs and posted a .225 batting average.
