Monday, June 13th, 1988: Fielder Bangs out 5 Base Hits
5 hits in 5 at-bats. It doesn't happen every day and when it does, it's exciting. Today Cecil Fielder of the Minnesota Twins had a sensational 5-5 game against Detroit at Metrodome. He rifled base hits all over the ballpark, but it didn't pay off in a victory. The Tigers took the game 11-7.

In the postgame press conference Fielder joked, "Heck, that's a week's worth of hitting for me and I did it all in one day. I guess I can take the rest of the week off... Right, Skip?" His manager retorted half-smilingly, "Only if we win the game, son... only if we win the ballgame. That's what they pay us to do, you know."

C. Fielder hit a two-run triple in the 1st, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 5th, doubled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off J. Habyan in the 9th.

Fielder is batting at a .267 pace in 1988, picking up 69 hits in 258 at-bats with 9 home runs, 44 RBIs and 43 runs scored.
Monday, June 13th, 1988: Fielder Touches All Bases, Hits for Cycle
It was his day, but the Detroit Tigers overcame a cycle by Cecil Fielder in a 11-7 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Metrodome today.

"It feels good for me, but it would have felt even better if we had won that ballgame," Fielder told the press corps. "I still enjoy it, but I would've liked to win the ballgame, too."

He cracked 5 hits in 5 at-bats, had 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored. Although his team lost, the Twins first baseman will still get his place in the record books.

Looking at his stats this year, Fielder has compiled a .267 batting average, while hitting 9 home runs and driving in 44 runs. He has played in 68 games and scored 43 runs.
Sunday, June 12th, 1988: Fidrych Pitches Detroit to Shutout Win
Detroit rode the magical arm of Mark Fidrych in a 9-0 shutout win over Minnesota. He shackled them on 4 hits and fanned 7. Almost to a man, the Minnesota Twins said he had them guessing wrong all game long.

Fidrych has made 14 starts this season, posting 5 wins and 2 losses. Opposing clubs are batting .271 against him and he has 70 strikeouts in 87 innings with a 4.24 ERA.
